An old man stood on his porch and watched flood waters surround his house. A neighbor came in his pickup to rescue him. But the old man waved away the rescuer and said, "Don't worry about me. God will take care of me."
The flood waters rose higher and the old man had to move up to his second floor balcony. A boat came to rescue him. But the old man waved away the rescuer and said, "Don't worry about me. God will take care of me."
The flood waters rose even higher and the old man had to climb up on the roof. A helicopter came to rescue him. But the old man waved away the rescuer and said, "Don't worry about me. God will take care of me."
Then a large tree washed down the river, smashed the house, and the old man drowned.
When the old man arrived in heaven, he told God, "I don't understand. Why didn't you take care of me?"
God replied, "I sent a pickup, a boat and a helicopter. What more could you ask?"
Why did the old man not recognize that the three rescuers were sent by God? Because he expected God to save his house, too.
How many times do we miss God's will for us because we are holding onto our house or our possessions? These are all temporary things that will not last.
Jesus said, "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life." (Matthew 19:29 NIV)
Jesus did not promise that we would actually possess a hundred times as much, but that we would have the use of all these things. Many people opened their homes to me while I was in Bible college and the ministry. One time, when I was on my way to Thailand for a missionary internship, an instructor at San Jose Bible College, a total stranger, allowed my family and another family to spend the night in her apartment while she was out of town. Another instructor, a total stranger, gave us a ride to the airport and picked us up again when we returned.
God certainly did keep His promise to provide every thing we needed when we were following Him.
